Why do some professionals thrive when they retire while others struggle and even go into decline?
Often we are ill-prepared to make the life-changing transition from full-time employment, whether we leave by choice or not. Our professional work is an important part of our identity, and filling that void and making productive use of our time and skills can be a major challenge.

Mike Mister and Rebecca Hill explore alternatives to the traditional “rules” of retirement aimed at busy, mid to later-career professionals making the transition out of large organisational life. Using case studies and insights gleaned from their consulting work, Mister and Hill present a roadmap to reinvent retirement and build a rewarding ‘encore’ career. Your encore can be the most exciting time of your life. From retraining in a new career path to making an impact by mentoring others or volunteering, a wealth of interesting possibilities awaits you!

Departure lounge transition
Aimed at experienced professionals heading for the organisational “departure lounge” after a lengthy successful career and where the organisation is keen to provide support on this critical transition in the form of a programme, peer learning and one to one coaching. The objective is to challenge, inspire and assist experienced professionals to take next step into a fulfilling encore.

Mike and his co-author and colleague, Rebecca Hill, have had the benefit of working to launch organisational and individual programmes in an organisational context. Their background and experience of working especially within partnerships and with experienced professionals means that they understand the practical steps needed to bring such programmes to life. For the organisation it means that they will have a cohort of departing leaders leaving in a pro-active, planned manner. Client and work transitions as well as the handover of internal leadership responsibilities will be smoothed, setting an example for those who follow.

Individuals will gain from the experience and empathetic support of two leaders who have trodden the path before. They will have access to a network of external support and advice as well as the possibility of forming their own cohorts of fellow travellers, making the same journey. It will result in a pro-active, planned exit from the organisation and transition into new opportunities and activities, supported and coached through the decision making and choices that need to be made.

Enables leaders within the organisation to gauge the appetite for either a 1:1 or group intervention to support those leaders who are heading towards transition.

An opportunity to hear about the “journey ahead”, the likely challenges and opportunities and to start to frame their own response to the inevitability of leaving the organisation in a safe environment into a fulfilling encore.

Coaching

Mike has a broad experience of working with senior professionals from the worlds of accounting, law and consulting amongst others. His style is best described as a “supportive challenge” and makes sure that his clients follow through on the commitments they have made to themselves. Mike draws on his many years of international experience and is based on blending an understanding of psychology and transitions and leadership blended with real world, business experience.

Consulting

Mike and his co-author and colleague, Rebecca Hill’s, coaching and consulting services are aimed at professionals heading for the organisational “departure lounge” after a lengthy successful career who are looking for experienced, individual, tailored support on this critical transition. The objective is to challenge, inspire and assist experienced clients to take next step into a fulfilling encore.
One to one coaching and consulting works best if based over six- or twelve-month period. Ideally kicking off no later than 6 months pre-transitioning out of organisational life but it’s also possible to do coaching immediately pre or post transitioning out of organisational life.

Mike is a compelling speaker, writer, facilitator and thought leader when it comes to organisational leadership and the challenges of our times. With two books and a visiting professorship at a top academic institution, he not only has blue chip credentials as a practitioner in industry for 35 years + but also as an academic – so whilst he is well versed in the theory, he is also very aware of the challenges of applying the theory in practice across geographies, cultures and sectors. I would highly recommend Mike if you are looking for a challenging, thought provoking professional as a speaker, facilitator or consultant.
– RH, Entrepreneur

I have known Mike in a professional capacity for over 30 years, when he was a great help on both a personal and professional level as I sought to integrate myself into a new organisation. He helped me navigate some tricky internal politics, as well as creating a coaching offering that proved hugely successful.
– JL, HR Director

I have used Mike in all of my HR Director roles in the legal profession. The roles he has performed have been many and varied (Development Centres; Workshop design and facilitation; running case studies at Partner Conferences to name but three) and all have been carried out with exemplary professionalism, exceptional technical insight, lots of innovation and great humour.
– DL, Chief People Officer

He is strategic, commercial, challenging and engaging in equal measure. He is extremely well networked and is wonderfully generous in sharing his time, his knowledge and his contacts, which further strengthens his relationships.
– LJ, Head of Human Resources

Mike is comfortable operating at all levels, from the most senior partners to the junior HR staff that support the programmes. He has numerous years of experience of working in all manner of partnerships both globally and in the UK and he has developed particular expertise in legal firms during the course of this. What separates Mike from some of his peers, is his ability to bring together the theoretical and the practical. He uses his knowledge and expertise exceptionally well to tailor his solutions to the organisation he is dealing with. One of his great strengths is that it feel like he is an extension of the internal team rather than purely external faculty, with the added benefit of having a phenomenal external perspective, based on his great experience. Due to his global exploits, Mike also has a highly developed sense of cross cultural sensitivity.
