Why do some professionals thrive when they retire while others struggle and even go into decline?

Often we are ill-prepared to make the life-changing transition from full-time employment, whether we leave by choice or not. Our professional work is an important part of our identity, and filling that void and making productive use of our time and skills can be a major challenge.

Mike Mister and Rebecca Hill explore alternatives to the traditional “rules” of retirement aimed at busy, mid to later-career professionals making the transition out of large organisational life. Using case studies and insights gleaned from their consulting work, Mister and Hill present a roadmap to reinvent retirement and build a rewarding ‘encore’ career. Your encore can be the most exciting time of your life. From retraining in a new career path to making an impact by mentoring others or volunteering, a wealth of interesting possibilities awaits you!

Departure lounge transition

Aimed at experienced professionals heading for the organisational “departure lounge” after a lengthy successful career and where the organisation is keen to provide support on this critical transition in the form of a programme, peer learning and one to one coaching. The objective is to challenge, inspire and assist experienced professionals to take next step into a fulfilling encore.

Rebecca and her co-author and colleague, Mike Mister, have had the benefit of working to launch organisational and individual programmes in an organisational context. Their background and experience of working especially within partnerships and with experienced professionals means that they understand the practical steps needed to bring such programmes to life. For the organisation it means that they will have a cohort of departing leaders leaving in a pro-active, planned manner. Client and work transitions as well as the handover of internal leadership responsibilities will be smoothed, setting an example for those who follow.

Individuals will gain from the experience and empathetic support of two leaders who have trodden the path before. They will have access to a network of external support and advice as well as the possibility of forming their own cohorts of fellow travellers, making the same journey. It will result in a pro-active, planned exit from the organisation and transition into new opportunities and activities, supported and coached through the decision making and choices that need to be made.

Enables leaders within the organisation to gauge the appetite for either a 1:1 or group intervention to support those leaders who are heading towards transition.

An opportunity to hear about the “journey ahead”, the likely challenges and opportunities and to start to frame their own response to the inevitability of leaving the organisation in a safe environment into a fulfilling encore.

Coaching

Rebecca has a broad experience of performance and leadership coaching. Increasingly, her coaching focuses on navigating mid to later life transitions. She has co-authored a book on this topic. Rebecca’s clients include a diverse range of CEOs, Partners, Entrepreneurs and Founders. Her coaching is very much influenced by psychology, neuro-science and transformational coaching approaches.

Consulting

Rebecca and her co-author and colleague, Mike Mister’s, coaching and consulting services are aimed at professionals heading for the organisational “departure lounge” after a lengthy successful career who are looking for experienced, individual, tailored support on this critical transition. The objective is to challenge, inspire and assist experienced clients to take next step into a fulfilling encore.

One to one coaching and consulting works best if based over six- or twelve-month period. Ideally kicking off no later than 6 months pre-transitioning out of organisational life but it’s also possible to do coaching immediately pre or post transitioning out of organisational life.

Individuals will gain from the experience and empathetic support of coaches and consultants who have trodden the path before. They will have access to a network of external support and advice as well as the possibility of forming their own cohorts of fellow travellers, making the same journey. It will result in a pro-active, planned exit from the organisation and transition into new opportunities and activities, supported and coached through the decision making and choices that need to be made.

Our coaching and consulting offer is built around each individual client’s needs and preferences and is value based – this means that we consult and coach on insights gained and actions committed to rather than time spent.

“I have worked with many, many leaders throughout my 50+ year professional career, and I can say without any reservations whatsoever that Rebecca stands in the upper echelons of those who have inspired me. Her knowledge, expertise, energy and generosity – not to mention her joie de vivre – as she connects like minds and resources is the antithesis of traditional corporate gridlock. Her innovative and entrepreneuring mind, especially in regard to the economic empowerment of women, is second only to her ability to put those innovative thoughts into action, opening doors and creating opportunities for women worldwide. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to work with such a consummate and compassionate professional.”
– Elizabeth Isele, Founder & CEO, Global Institute for Experienced Entrepreneurship

“Rebecca is a really inspirational coach. She helped me to see the various dynamics on my board and within the company through a different lens. She enabled me to approach my CEO leadership in an authentic way and to communicate, ask the right questions and make the right moves at the right times. She also has a great grasp of female leadership and the gender differences. I would heartily recommend her as a superb CEO coach.”
– Jane Theaker, CEO, PbD Biotech

“I invited Rebecca to design and chair two panels about female entrepreneurship on Enterprise Tuesday, a programme offered by Cambridge Judge Business School’s Entrepreneurship Centre. Rebecca’s expertise, network, insight, and professionalism guaranteed an expert lineup of speakers. She facilitated the discussion with wonderful clarity, gravity and structure. The panel discussion kept the audience engaged and the feedback was phenomenal. Every attendee left inspired or having learned something new. It’s a great pleasure to work with Rebecca whose guidance and insight I have also sought on multiple occasions. I highly recommend her services.”
– Dr Ghina M. Halabi, Space Scientist, She Speaks Science

“I worked with Rebecca at EY in her capacity as the global co-lead on EY’s Women Fast.forward. In particular, we collaborated on EY’s Entrepreneurial Winning Women and it’s launch across EMEIA as well as the 30% Club cross company mentoring scheme aimed at mid career women.

“For the latter, she led the pilot of the cross company mentoring scheme which EY created and then provided to The 30% Club to run. Rebecca turned the vision into reality – she worked across organisations using her great strategic project management and interpersonal skills to deliver on time and within budget. She really drove the programme forward in terms of use of technology and gaining successful engagement and buy-in of organisations. Rebecca was also laser focused on the dual task of running the pilot but really looking at how it could be scaled up and move to a BAU model.

The programme today has seen over 3000 female mentees benefit from a cross company mentor from some of the biggest brands in the FTSE100 and it runs in largely the same way as the model established by Rebecca.
She is a pleasure to work with and should be really proud of the lasting legacy she created.”
– Joanna Santinon, EY Women’s Network, UK

"In a nutshell: brilliant coach with a mix of great questioning and real life experience, came away from the sessions with a renewed sense of self, and a desire to further explore different issues. By the end I had a completely different outcome to what I expected but because I was wiser from the process. Don’t procrastinate any further and get yourself an intro!"
